Alfraé Irene Johnson-Ragins, Harpist

A native New Yorker, Alfraé Irene Johnson-Ragins embraces life to its fullest. She is people-oriented and finds great enjoyment in the performing arts.

A graduate of the High School of Music and Art, Alfraé earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Fisk University with a concentration in harp. A music enthusiast, she has frequently donated her talent to promoting fundraising endeavors for various charitable organizations including her church, Grace Congregational Church, and her sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, Sorority, Inc.

She has performed for Church of the Palms in Delray Beach, Florida where she conducted a harp workshop for local community youth. In 2006, she traveled to Selma, Alabama to perform at the Earl Goodwin Theatre. The concert, sponsored by Tabernacle Baptist Church, was a huge success, attracting an audience of young and old alike, and raking in generous proceeds for the church. The concert, the first of its kind in Selma, caught the attention of one of the city’s historical museums, The Old Depot Museum, which, following the concert, added Alfraé’s portrait to its collection.

For the past 11 years, she has served on the Board of Directors of the Central Harlem Meals on Wheels, now known as the Walburg Center. Alfraé is a life member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and has held offices on both the local and regional levels.

She is the recipient of the Hattie McDaniel’s Award for excellence in the performing arts given by the Delta Nu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. She enjoys public speaking, writing, travel, chess, listening to good jazz, the theatre and riding with her husband on his Harley Davidson. Employed by the law firm of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP, Alfraé is married to her life partner and soulmate, Willis “Snook” Ragins.

Alfraé is an exceptional talent, and we are thrilled that she will be performing several pieces during the Humanitarian Awards “Virtual Affair” gala on Tuesday, October 20^th.
